History and name

Carroll County was created in 1840. It was named in honor of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a Maryland planter and patriot who was the last surviving signer of the United States Declaration of Independence; he died in 1832. The county’s formation in the mid-19th century reflected the administrative reorganization that accompanied population growth and community development in New England.

Government, communities and economy

The county government is centered in the town of Ossipee. Carroll County contains a mixture of small towns and unincorporated areas; some communities are oriented toward tourism and seasonal residents, while others are focused on local services, forestry and small-scale industry. Recreation, hospitality and retail connected to outdoor tourism are important contributors to the local economy, especially in mountain- and lake-side towns.

Recreation and cultural notes

Carroll County is known for outdoor recreation such as hiking, skiing, boating and fishing. Winter sports and summer lake activities draw visitors to the region, supporting seasonal businesses and cultural attractions.
