History and development

The brewery was established on 10 November 1847 by J. C. Jacobsen. From its 19th-century origins it grew through industrial-scale brewing and research. Jacobsen set up a scientific laboratory and later a foundation to support cultural and scientific work. Innovations from the Carlsberg Laboratory played an important role in modern brewing.

Products and brewing science

Carlsberg produces a range of beers, most notably a pale lager sold under the Carlsberg name. The brewery has been associated with advances in yeast cultivation and microbiology; researchers there isolated cultures used in lager production that improved consistency and shelf life. Its product range includes:

Global presence

Over time the company expanded beyond Denmark into Europe, Asia and Africa. The Carlsberg Foundation and related institutions have contributed to scientific research and the arts.
