Overview

The Canadian Tire Centre is a multi-purpose indoor arena located in the western suburb of Kanata, on the western edge of Ottawa in the province of Ontario, Canada. Opened in January 1996, it serves as the principal home for the National Hockey League franchise the Ottawa Senators and as a regional venue for large concerts, family shows, and other indoor sporting events.

Design and features

The arena was built to host professional hockey while remaining adaptable for other large-audience presentations. Seating arrangements are flexible: the bowl is configured primarily for hockey but can be changed to accommodate end-stage and center-stage concert layouts, trade shows and corporate gatherings. Concourse amenities typically include suites and club seating, concession areas, locker rooms and media facilities suitable for national broadcasts.

History and naming

When it opened in 1996 the building was originally known as The Palladium. It later carried corporate names as part of naming-rights agreements: Corel Centre from the late 1990s into the mid-2000s, then Scotiabank Place, before adopting the current Canadian Tire Centre name in 2013. The site was developed to provide a modern suburban home for a growing NHL market and to offer a larger-capacity facility than older downtown venues.

Uses and significance

The venue is best known as the Ottawa Senators’ home arena and for hosting professional hockey games, but its calendar is diverse. Typical bookings include large concert tours, family entertainment (such as ice shows and circuses), and occasional specialty sporting events. The arena plays a notable role in the local economy by drawing visitors for major events and supporting seasonal employment in hospitality and event services.

Access, criticism and updates

Because the arena is sited in a suburban business park rather than the downtown core, access has often been a topic of public discussion. Transit connections and event-day shuttles have been used to supplement roadway access and parking; this suburban location has advantages for large parking capacity but can pose challenges for patrons relying on public transit. Over time the facility has undergone periodic upgrades to seating, technology and guest services to remain competitive with newer arenas while continuing to host a wide range of public events.
