Overview
Burke County is a county located in the foothills of the western Piedmont of North Carolina. Its county seat is Morganton, a regional center for government, commerce and local culture. As recorded in the 2000 census the county population was 89,148; since then the area has experienced demographic and economic changes typical of many Appalachian and Piedmont communities.
Geography and environment
The county sits between the higher Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and the lower Piedmont plateau to the east, giving it a mix of ridges, river valleys and rolling farmland. Rivers and reservoirs afford opportunities for boating, fishing and scenic views, and portions of public land and parks support hiking and outdoor recreation.
History and development
Burke County was established in the late 18th century from earlier colonial boundaries and named for a prominent Revolutionary-era figure. Its early economy was shaped by agriculture and small-scale industry; during the 19th and 20th centuries mills, furniture and other manufacturing became important, and many communities grew around rail and river transportation corridors. Historic downtowns, courthouses and churches reflect the county's long-settled character.
Economy and communities
The local economy today is diverse: manufacturing, health care, retail and services, as well as agriculture and tourism, all play roles. The county contains one principal city, Morganton, and several smaller towns and unincorporated communities that provide civic services and local commerce. Regional cooperation with nearby counties shapes planning and economic development initiatives in the western Piedmont.
