Overview

West Betuwe is a municipality in the western part of the Betuwe region of the Netherlands. It was established on 1 January 2019 by merging the former municipalities of Geldermalsen, Lingewaal and Neerijnen. At the time of its founding, the combined population was about 50,800 people; the municipality brings together towns, villages and rural areas under a single local government.

Geography and landscape

The area occupies riverine lowlands characteristic of the Betuwe: fertile floodplains and polder landscapes shaped by tributaries of the Rhine. Fruit orchards, meadows and floodplain nature are prominent features. The municipality lies within the Dutch province of Gelderland and is positioned among regional transport links that connect it with nearby urban centres.

History and formation

The creation of West Betuwe followed a municipal reorganisation aimed at improving administrative efficiency and public services by combining smaller local governments. The three predecessor municipalities each contributed settlements and infrastructure; the new municipality consolidated municipal responsibilities such as spatial planning, schools and local roads.

Government, population and services

Like other Dutch municipalities, West Betuwe is governed by a municipal council and a college of mayor and aldermen. The largest population centres include the former seat of Geldermalsen and surrounding villages. Demographic and administrative data are maintained by national and provincial authorities and can be consulted through official channels for up-to-date figures (statistics).

Economy, culture and recreation

The local economy mixes agriculture—especially fruit production typical of the Betuwe—with small businesses, services and some light industry. The river landscapes support recreation: cycling routes, walking trails and birdwatching in floodplain reserves are common leisure activities. Cultural life is rooted in village traditions, seasonal festivals and local markets.
