Westvoorne was a municipality on the island of Voorne-Putten in the Dutch province of South Holland. It combined coastal landscapes, small villages and protected dune areas, attracting both day visitors and residents who commute to larger nearby cities. In 2019 the municipality had about 14,626 inhabitants.

Location and landscape

Situated on the western edge of Voorne-Putten, Westvoorne faced coastal waters and low-lying polder land. The shore, dune belts and adjacent nature reserves form a characteristic mix of sandy beaches, maritime vegetation and agricultural plots. Its position gives relatively easy access to regional transport and the Rotterdam metropolitan area.

Villages and settlements

  • Oostvoorne
  • Rockanje
  • Tinte and smaller hamlets

These population centres provided local services, shops and community life while relying on tourism and small-scale agriculture for much of the local economy. For more municipal information see the municipal page.

History and administration

Westvoorne existed as a municipal unit within South Holland and was shaped by the Netherlands' long history of municipal reorganization. In recent administrative changes the area became part of a larger local government structure; further details on provincial arrangements can be found via the province portal and regional resources here.

Nature, recreation and economy

The municipality was notable for its dune landscapes and coastal recreation opportunities. Nature reserves and walking routes supported biodiversity and drew visitors for birdwatching, hiking and beach activities. Local economic activity blended tourism, horticulture, small enterprises and commuter employment. Practical visitor information and local trails are listed on many regional guides (see guides).

Notable fact: Westvoorne's combination of coastal dunes and village life made it a locally important recreational area in South Holland. For current administrative status and services consult municipal and provincial links above.
