Overview
Weststellingwerf is a municipality in the Dutch Netherlands province of Friesland (Stellingwerven area). In 2019 the municipality had 25,840 inhabitants. Its largest town and administrative centre is Wolvega; the area also contains several smaller villages and rural settlements.
Geography and settlements
The municipality lies in the southern part of Friesland, bordering the province of Overijssel to the south. The landscape is typical of this part of the Netherlands: a mix of low-lying agricultural land, remnants of former peat areas, canals and small woodlands. Settlements are a combination of market towns and scattered villages.
- Wolvega — municipal centre and main service town
- Noordwolde — local centre with residential and small-business activities
- Various villages and hamlets that retain a rural character
Language and culture: The local spoken idiom is traditionally Stellingwerfs, a variety of Low Saxon; Frisian (West Frisian) is part of the provincial identity but is less commonly used in everyday speech here. Local customs and festivals reflect a rural, community-oriented society.
History and economy: Historically the area developed through agriculture and peat extraction, which shaped settlement patterns and water management. Today the local economy combines farming, small industry and service businesses. Nature areas, cycling routes and waterways also contribute to tourism and recreation.
Governance is by a municipal council and mayor; transport links connect Weststellingwerf with surrounding towns and the wider province. Visitors often come for outdoor activities, local markets and to explore traditional villages that illustrate Friesland's varied regional character.
