Wassenaar (South Holland, Netherlands)

Wassenaar is a coastal town and municipality in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. It is situated close to The Hague and the North Sea coast and had a population of roughly 26,211 in 2019. The town combines residential neighbourhoods with extensive green areas and shoreline.

The landscape around Wassenaar is characterised by sand dunes, beach frontage and wooded estates. Much of the municipality consists of low-lying dune terrain that serves both as a recreational amenity and a natural buffer against the sea. Large villas, historic country houses and well-tended parks are common, reflecting the area's long association with wealthier residents.

Historically Wassenaar developed from a rural village into an upscale residential suburb of the Hague region. In the 19th and 20th centuries, aristocratic and affluent families established country estates here, and the town later attracted diplomats and international staff because of its proximity to national and international institutions based in nearby cities.

Today the local economy is primarily residential and service-oriented. The municipality hosts a mix of local shops, professional services and leisure facilities. Wassenaar is known for its relatively high property values and for attracting expatriates and diplomatic households; local educational and community services reflect that demographic mix.
