Overview
Teylingen is a municipality in the western Netherlands. It lies in the province of South Holland and forms part of the low-lying, densely populated Dutch landscape. The modern municipality was created on 1 January 2006 from the former municipalities of Sassenheim, Voorhout and Warmond. In 2019 the population was about 37,061. For official administrative information see the municipal page and for country context consult the Netherlands.

Geography and constituent towns

Teylingen occupies a mix of small towns, agricultural land and recreational waters. The principal population centres are Sassenheim, Voorhout and Warmond. Warmond sits adjacent to the Kagerplassen lake system, a popular area for boating and watersports. The municipality is also part of the Bollenstreek bulb-growing region, recognized for its colorful spring fields and horticultural activity.

History and landmarks

The area has medieval roots and retains notable historic sites. The ruins and grounds of Slot Teylingen, a medieval castle near Voorhout, are a prominent local monument and landscape feature. The merger of the three former municipalities in 2006 established Teylingen as a single local government area; more historical background can be found via provincial resources at South Holland information and local heritage pages such as regional culture.

Economy, recreation and transport

Teylingen's economy blends horticulture—especially bulb cultivation—with small and medium enterprises, services and tourism linked to its lakes and cycling routes. Its location offers convenient road and rail links to nearby cities such as Leiden and The Hague, making it attractive for commuters and day visitors. Boating on the Kagerplassen and seasonal flower viewing are common recreational draws.
