Renkum is a municipality in the eastern part of the Netherlands. Located in the province of Gelderland, it lies close to the city of Arnhem and combines small towns, riverside landscapes and woodland. The municipality had approximately 31,000 inhabitants in 2019 and functions as a residential, cultural and recreational area for the region. See local reference pages for contemporary statistics: municipal information.
Geography and settlements
Renkum covers a mix of riverine terrain along branches of the Rhine and the edge of the Veluwe, a forested sand ridge. It includes several villages and population centres, for example:
- Renkum (the municipal seat)
- Oosterbeek
- Doorwerth
- Heelsum and Heveadorp
- Wolfheze
These places vary from relatively dense village centres to scattered rural neighbourhoods and forested recreation areas.
History and notable sites
The area has a long history of settlement and estate development. Doorwerth Castle is a prominent historic site, partially rebuilt and open to visitors. Renkum's villages are also known for their links to the Second World War: the fighting around Arnhem and Operation Market Garden left a lasting legacy, commemorated at museums and memorials in the municipality. The Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek preserves many exhibits relating to those events and their local impact.
Economy, governance and recreation
Renkum combines local services, small-scale industry and commuter housing—many residents travel to nearby Arnhem for work. Municipal affairs are handled by a council and mayor typical of Dutch local government; further administrative details can be found on official portals such as the municipality page or regional resources like provincial guides. Outdoor recreation in forests, along riverbanks and around historic estates is a significant attraction for residents and visitors.
Notable distinctions include the concentration of WWII heritage sites, easy access to Arnhem, and proximity to the Veluwe natural area, which together make Renkum an area of both local historical importance and contemporary recreational value.
