Noordwijk is a coastal municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. It combines seaside resorts, dunes and horticultural countryside. In 2019 the municipality had roughly 42,859 residents and that same year it was enlarged when the former municipality of Noordwijkerhout became part of Noordwijk. For official administrative information see the municipal site.

Geography and layout

Noordwijk sits along the North Sea coast with a long sandy beach backed by dune systems. The municipality includes both the coastal settlement and adjacent inland villages and bulb fields that belong to a broader flower-growing zone often called the Bollenstreek. The built environment is a mix of historic village centres, tourist promenades and agricultural land used for bulb cultivation.

History and development

The area developed historically as a fishing and farming community and later grew into a popular seaside destination. Over the 19th and 20th centuries tourism expanded with promenades, hotels and holiday facilities. Administrative boundaries have shifted several times; the most recent change enlarged Noordwijk when the neighbouring municipality of Noordwijkerhout was merged into it in 2019.

Economy, culture and institutions

Local economic activity is diversified. Tourism and hospitality tied to beaches and coastal recreation are important, as are horticulture and bulb production that draw seasonal visitors for flower displays. Noordwijk is also known internationally as the location of the European Space Agency’s technical centre, which brings research, conferences and skilled employment to the town. Cultural life mixes small museums, festivals and events that reflect both maritime and horticultural traditions.

Transport and notable features

The town is accessible by road and public transport from nearby urban centres such as Leiden and larger cities in the Randstad. Notable local features include a coastal promenade, dunes used for nature recreation, a lighthouse and networks of cycling routes that connect to the wider region. The combination of recreational coastline and nearby flower fields makes Noordwijk a distinct destination in the western Netherlands.
