Overview
Nissewaard is a municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. It was created on 1 January 2015 by the merger of the former municipalities of Bernisse and Spijkenisse. The new municipality combines a larger town centre with several smaller villages and rural areas and had a population of about 84,800 residents in 2019.
Geography and settlements
Nissewaard lies in the western Netherlands, close to the urban region around Rotterdam. Its territory includes the town of Spijkenisse — the largest population centre — together with the towns and villages that had formed the former Bernisse municipality. The area mixes residential neighbourhoods, local commercial zones and the agricultural or open spaces that surround the settlements.
History and administration
The municipality was formed to streamline local government and to combine services and planning across a contiguous area. Local administration is seated in the largest urban centre and the council represents the combined communities. For municipal information and services see the official municipal pages: Nissewaard municipal site or a regional overview at South Holland province.
Economy, transport and daily life
Nissewaard functions partly as a commuter area for nearby Rotterdam, offering road and public transport links that connect residents to employment and cultural facilities in the wider region. The local economy includes retail, services, light industry and small businesses serving the residential population. Visitors and residents can find parks, shopping areas and community facilities concentrated in and around the main town.
Culture, attractions and community
Though primarily residential, the municipality maintains cultural events, sports clubs and local traditions that reflect both the urban and village character of the area. Historic village centres, waterfronts and community venues provide focal points for local identity.
