Overview

The Navy Midshipmen are the intercollegiate athletic programs that represent the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The academy sponsors a broad slate of teams—including 33 varsity sports and a number of club teams—whose members are simultaneously students preparing for commissioning as Navy or Marine Corps officers. The teams compete under the auspices of the NCAA at the Division I level.

Teams, colors and mascot

Both men's and women's squads are officially called the Navy Midshipmen and are commonly referred to as "Mids." Team colors are navy blue and gold, and the program’s traditional mascot is Bill the Goat. Popular varsity programs include football, basketball, lacrosse, rowing (crew), sailing, soccer and baseball, while numerous club sports offer additional competitive opportunities.

Purpose and character

Athletics at the Naval Academy serve both competitive and developmental purposes. Participation develops physical fitness, leadership, teamwork and resilience—qualities emphasized in naval service. Midshipmen balance a rigorous academic schedule, military training and competition; after graduation most enter active duty, a distinguishing feature compared with civilian universities.

Intercollegiate athletics have been part of the Naval Academy’s life for well over a century. The best-known rivalry is with the United States Military Academy in the annual Army–Navy contests, most famously the football game, which is one of the longest-running and most storied rivalries in college sports. Other traditions and ceremonies surround key matchups and team milestones.

Competition and organization

Navy teams compete at the Division I level and participate in a mix of conference affiliations and independent scheduling depending on the sport. That arrangement allows the academy to pursue high-level competition while accommodating the service obligations and academic calendar of its students.
