Early life and formation

Born in 1926, Jaworski came of age during a turbulent era in Central Europe. He pursued priestly formation and early pastoral work before devoting years to academic, pastoral and administrative responsibilities within the Church. Archbishop of Lviv

Appointed to lead the Latin archdiocese of Lviv at the time when public religious life was being restored, Jaworski guided the rebuilding of parishes, seminaries and charitable works previously constrained by state policies. He prioritized the training of clergy, the renovation of church property, and the reorganization of pastoral care so that the Latin‑rite community could recover institutional stability and serve a diverse population.

Cardinalate and public role

As a member of the College of Cardinals, Jaworski contributed to discussions about the situation of the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. He was known for advocating pastoral attention to communities suffering neglect under Soviet rule and for encouraging dialogue among Roman Catholics, Eastern Catholics and Orthodox Christians in a region characterized by multiple rites and traditions.

Later years and legacy

After retiring from the archbishopric in 2008, Jaworski remained a respected elder statesman of the Church, particularly in Poland and Ukraine. He died in Krakow on 5 September 2020 at the age of 94.
