Lucy Powell (born 10 October 1974) is a British Labour and Co‑operative politician who has represented Manchester Central in the House of Commons since winning a by‑election in November 2012. She sits as a member of the Labour and Co‑operative parties and is active in debates on urban policy, public services and education. Her parliamentary role places her within the wider framework of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

Political career

Powell entered Parliament after a by‑election caused by a vacancy in the Manchester Central constituency. Early in her parliamentary career she was appointed to the Labour frontbench and in September 2015 became Shadow Secretary of State for Education in the shadow cabinet led by Jeremy Corbyn. She resigned from that post in June 2016 during a period of widespread frontbench changes. Since then she has continued to serve as a prominent constituency MP and as an opposition spokesperson on a range of issues.

Areas of focus and roles

Throughout her time in Parliament Powell has been associated with themes common to Manchester representatives: city‑region devolution, support for public services, and efforts to attract investment and jobs to urban centres. As a Labour and Co‑operative MP she also engages with the co‑operative movement and with policies affecting consumers and communities. Her contributions include parliamentary questions, debates and constituency casework aimed at local and national priorities.

Background and public profile

Before her election she worked in party and policy roles and was involved in political campaigns and organisational work within Labour circles. In Parliament she is regarded as a pragmatic voice with experience of both constituency politics and national policy debate. Her public profile has been shaped by visible intervention on education and city policy, and by participation in national media and local events.

Powell's career illustrates the path from party and campaign work to parliamentary representation and frontbench responsibility. She remains a key figure for constituents in Manchester Central and an active participant in debates about public services, education and urban policy.
