Lester Legrant Bond (October 27, 1829 – April 15, 1903) was an American politician best known for serving as acting Mayor of Chicago for a brief period in 1873. He assumed municipal leadership from August 18 to December 1, 1873, while Mayor Joseph Medill was away in Europe. Bond’s short tenure occurred during the city’s continuing recovery from the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and a period of rapid urban growth.

Bond was born on October 27, 1829, in Ravenna, Ohio. Contemporary notices and biographical summaries record his family ties and private life: he was married to Mary Aspenwell and they had a daughter, Laura Bond. His Ohio birth and later move to Illinois reflect the 19th‑century westward migration common to many who shaped Midwestern municipal life.

Acting mayoralty (August–December 1873)

When Mayor Medill left for Europe in the summer of 1873, Bond stepped in as acting mayor and carried out the routine and emergency duties of city government during that interval. His interim leadership maintained civic continuity while the elected mayor was absent.

Later life and death

After his service as acting mayor, Bond remained a resident of Chicago and continued to be associated with local affairs.
