Overview
Lansingerland is a municipality in the Netherlands, located in the province of South Holland. Established in 2007, it comprises several towns and villages that together form a suburban and semi-rural area east of Rotterdam. The municipality had roughly 61,600 residents in 2019, and it functions as both a residential commuter belt and a centre for local services.
Geography and transport
The municipality sits within the densely populated Randstad region and features a mixture of built-up neighbourhoods, agricultural plots, glasshouse horticulture and interlaced waterways typical of Dutch lowland landscapes. Public transport and regional roads provide frequent connections to nearby cities, enabling many residents to commute to employment centres such as Rotterdam, Delft and The Hague.
History and formation
Lansingerland was created on 1 January 2007 by merging the former municipalities of Berkel en Rodenrijs, Bleiswijk and Bergschenhoek. The consolidation was part of a broader trend in the Netherlands to combine smaller municipalities for more efficient administration and coordinated planning of services and infrastructure.
Economy and community
The local economy mixes small-scale commerce, services, and horticulture. Glasshouse cultivation and related logistics are visible in parts of the municipality, while local retail and education serve the daily needs of residents. Community facilities include schools, sports clubs and cultural programming organised by municipal institutions.
Government and services
Like other Dutch municipalities, Lansingerland is governed by an elected municipal council and an executive college. The mayor and aldermen oversee public works, spatial planning, social services and environmental policy. Local planning emphasises balanced growth, green space and bicycle-friendly infrastructure.
Notable features and recreation
Residents and visitors find a range of recreational opportunities: cycling and walking routes through polder landscapes, small parks and waterways for informal leisure, and community events in the towns.
