Ignazio Cassis (born 13 April 1961 in Sessa) is a Swiss medical doctor and a long‑standing public official. He trained as a physician and later entered politics as a member of the liberal party FDP.The Liberals. After a decade in the Swiss upper chamber, he was elected to the Federal Council on 20 September 2017 and assumed office on 1 November 2017 as head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.
Background and medical career
Cassis studied medicine and completed clinical training at Swiss institutions before practising in the canton of Ticino and in hospital settings. His background in health care shaped his early public image: a professional who brought clinical experience and problem‑solving skills into political life. Political rise and Federal Council
Before joining the Federal Council, Cassis represented the canton of Ticino in the Council of States (the upper house of the Federal Assembly). His election to the executive branch in 2017 followed the resignation of Didier Burkhalter; Cassis succeeded him as head of the foreign ministry on 1 November 2017 (Didier Burkhalter was his immediate predecessor). As a Federal Councillor he exercises collective responsibility for national government policy while leading his department.
Role and priorities as head of foreign affairs
As head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Cassis oversees Switzerland’s diplomatic relations, international cooperation, consular protection, and participation in multilateral organisations. His tenure has emphasised maintaining Switzerland’s traditional neutrality while engaging in economic and humanitarian diplomacy. He has focused on dialogue with neighbouring states and institutions to advance Swiss interests abroad.
Presidency of the Confederation and significance
In 2022 Cassis served as President of the Swiss Confederation for a one‑year term, a role that rotates among Federal Councillors and is largely representative. The presidency involves chairing Federal Council meetings, representing Switzerland at selected state visits and international events, and highlighting national priorities on the world stage. His year in the office underscored the participation of the Italian‑speaking region in federal leadership and the continuing practice of balanced linguistic and regional representation.
