Evangelista Torricelli — inventor of the barometer and early modern mathematician

Evangelista Torricelli (15 October 1608 – 25 October 1647) was an Italian scientist whose work bridged physics and mathematics during the early scientific revolution. Trained in the experimental and mathematical traditions associated with Galileo Galilei, Torricelli combined laboratory demonstration with geometric reasoning and is most famous for the invention of the mercury barometer, a device that made atmospheric pressure measurable and established the reality of a vacuum.

Life and career

Born in Faenza, Torricelli came to prominence as a pupil and collaborator of leading Tuscan scientists and later served at the Medici court in Florence. His brief life was marked by close involvement with practical measurement and with mathematical problems of area and volume. Contemporary accounts describe him as both an experimentalist and a skilled geometer, a combination that shaped his principal discoveries and writings. He died in Florence in 1647.

Barometer and vacuum

Torricelli’s barometer used mercury because its high density allows a practical column height. By showing that a glass tube filled with mercury and inverted over a basin left a space above the mercury, he demonstrated that space could be free of air — what became known as a vacuum — and that the height of the mercury column reflected the pressure of the atmosphere. The instrument and its interpretation influenced meteorology, instrument-making and the philosophical debate about voids and nature.

Mathematics and notable results

In mathematical work Torricelli advanced methods related to indivisibles, a precursor to integral calculus. He investigated the geometry of curves and solids and is associated with striking examples such as the figure known as Torricelli’s trumpet (or Gabriel’s Horn), which paradoxically has finite volume but infinite surface area. He also derived a simple law for fluid efflux from an orifice — now often called Torricelli’s law — relating exit speed to the height of fluid.

Optics, instruments and influence

Alongside theoretical work he made practical improvements in optics and instrument design. His combination of experiment and geometry influenced later mathematicians and physicists who developed calculus and fluid mechanics. Torricelli’s name is attached to several concepts and remains a landmark figure in the transition from Renaissance natural philosophy to modern science.
