Ernesto "Tino" Brambilla (31 January 1934 – 3 August 2020) was an Italian competitor in top-level motorcycle Grand Prix racing who later pursued a career in automobile racing. Born and based in Monza, he became known in the late 1950s and early 1960s for racing in the 350cc motorcycle class and for making occasional appearances in car events at national and international level. He is often remembered as part of the vibrant postwar Italian motorsport scene and as the elder brother of Formula One driver Vittorio Brambilla.
Motorcycle career
Brambilla raced in Grand Prix motorcycle competitions, often campaigning in the 350cc category. He scored points across several seasons and twice finished the year ranked tenth in the 350cc world standings, with those results recorded in 1959 and again in 1961. His motorcycle activity placed him among the cadre of riders who competed on public road circuits and purpose-built tracks during an era when Grand Prix motorcycle racing was gaining international prominence. For background on this form of racing see Grand Prix motorcycle racing.
Transition to cars and Formula One attempts
In the early 1960s Brambilla expanded into four-wheel competition. He entered events in sports cars and also attempted to qualify for Formula One Grands Prix. His first known attempt at the Italian Grand Prix came in 1963, when he failed to make the race. Records indicate he made multiple entries in car racing during this period as he sought to establish himself on circuits beyond two wheels. Contemporary accounts describe him as a professional race car driver who competed in various national and international meetings; more on Italian racing drivers and careers can be found via professional race car driver resources.
Brambilla’s racing life reflected a common pattern of the time: riders and drivers moving between categories to pursue opportunities and extend competitive careers. He raced at and around Monza, the historic racing town and home of the Autodromo Nazionale, which served as a focal point for Italian motorsport development and events (Monza).
