Overview

Druten is a town and municipality in the eastern Netherlands. It lies in the province of Gelderland and forms part of the low-lying river landscape often called the Land van Maas en Waal. The municipality had roughly 18,800 inhabitants in 2019; it combines a compact town centre with surrounding villages, farms and green corridors.

Geographically, Druten occupies riverine plains shaped by the Rhine–Meuse delta. The area is characterized by fertile soils, orchards and poldered fields, with small wooded patches and dikes that control seasonal water levels. Its setting makes agriculture and horticulture prominent uses of the land, while rivers and cycle paths provide opportunities for leisure and outdoor recreation.

History and development

Settlement in the Druten area dates back many centuries; like much of the Dutch riverside, it developed around parish centres, small markets and agricultural estates. Over time the town evolved from a rural cluster into a municipal centre providing services to surrounding hamlets. Twentieth-century transport and infrastructure improvements strengthened local commerce and commuting connections to nearby urban areas.

Economy, services and culture

The local economy mixes agriculture (notably fruit growing and greenhouse horticulture), small-scale manufacturing and service industries. Druten provides municipal services, schools, sports clubs and cultural facilities that serve both town and countryside residents. Regular markets, community events and seasonal festivals contribute to local identity and tourism appeal.
