Early career and radio

Ellis began performing professionally as a young singer. In 1941 she joined the Cincinnati radio station WLW, where she sang on network programs and gained wider exposure. Like many vocalists of her era she worked in radio, nightclubs and recordings, developing a clear, versatile soprano that suited movie soundtracks as well as live performance.

Film dubbing and notable work

Ellis became especially known for dubbing the singing voices of on‑screen actresses who either could not sing or whose recorded voices were preferred by the studio. Her most famous dubbing is for Rita Hayworth in the 1946 film Gilda, where Ellis supplied the singing for memorable numbers. She also dubbed performers such as Vera‑Ellen and Jeanne Crain in various studio productions. The practice of using off‑screen singers was common; dubbing artists were often uncredited or little known to the public.

Later life
