Alphen aan den Rijn is a municipality and town in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. It lies along the Oude Rijn (Old Rhine) and its name literally means "Alphen on the Rhine." The municipality had about 110,986 inhabitants in 2019 and serves as a regional centre for commerce, services and recreation. For municipal information see the municipal website.

Location and administrative structure

Alphen is part of the Dutch administrative landscape and belongs to the province of South Holland. It sits amid the low-lying polder landscape typical of the region, with waterways, greenhouses and small villages nearby. On 1 January 2014 the neighbouring municipalities of Boskoop and Rijnwoude were merged into Alphen aan den Rijn, expanding its territory and adding centres known for horticulture and riverine villages. History and heritage

The town's roots are old: archaeological finds along the Oude Rijn show habitation and activity in Roman and medieval periods. Over centuries Alphen developed as a riverside settlement, with bridges and trade along the Rhine. Visitors interested in the region's past can explore reconstructed and interpretive sites that illustrate prehistoric, Roman and medieval life.

Economy and land use

The local economy mixes services and light industry with a notable horticultural tradition. Boskoop, now part of the municipality, is internationally known for tree nurseries and woody-plant cultivation; the area’s greenhouses and plant trade contribute to the regional economy. Retail centres, professional services and local manufacturing also provide employment.

Transport, recreation and culture

Alphen is connected to the Dutch rail and road networks and is traversed by regional cycle routes. The Oude Rijn and adjacent parks are popular for walking, boating and cycling. Cultural attractions include open-air historical exhibitions, museums and seasonal events that reflect local history and horticultural heritage.
