Albrandswaard is a municipality in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. It occupies part of the island of IJsselmonde and is located southwest of the city of Rotterdam. The municipality is primarily residential but retains agricultural polderland, river banks and local centres that serve the surrounding Rijnmond metropolitan region.
Settlements and layout
Albrandswaard consists of two principal population centres:
- Rhoon — a village with historic landmarks and riverside areas
- Poortugaal — a compact town with local shops and community facilities
Together the two settlements and surrounding countryside numbered roughly 25,000 inhabitants around 2019. The municipality forms a near-suburban link to Rotterdam while preserving patches of open land and dykes along the river.
History and character
The modern municipality was established by combining the former local administrations of Rhoon and Poortugaal in the late 20th century. Both places have older origins: Rhoon is noted for a historic castle and riverside defenses, while Poortugaal developed as a small river village. Over time the area has evolved into a commuter and residential district while retaining traces of its agricultural and maritime past.
Government, economy and amenities
As with other Dutch municipalities, Albrandswaard is governed by an elected municipal council and an executive college. The local economy is mixed: many residents commute to nearby Rotterdam for work, while local employment includes retail, services, small industry and agriculture on reclaimed polders. Recreational amenities include river promenades, cycling routes and community centres.
Notable features and visiting
- Riverside dykes and polder landscapes that illustrate Dutch water management
