Boufféré is a settlement in western France that was until 1 January 2019 an independent commune. On that date it joined neighbouring communes to form the new municipality of Montaigu-Vendée, part of a wider national movement to create "communes nouvelles" intended to pool local services, simplify administration and coordinate development at a larger scale.

Overview

Administratively Boufféré lies in the region of Pays de la Loire and within the departmental territory of Vendée. Although it no longer exists as an autonomous municipal council, Boufféré remains a named locality and a community with its own schools, shops, sports associations and local traditions. The place name is still used for neighbourhoods, addresses and cultural activity.

Geography and transport

The locality occupies typical western French countryside: a mix of agricultural land, small woodland patches and built village areas. Its situation gives residents access to regional road networks and public transport links connecting smaller towns and market centres in Pays de la Loire. The climate is temperate, and land use has long combined arable farming, pasture and rural settlement.

History and administration

Boufféré functioned as a municipal commune under France's local-government system until the 2019 merger into Montaigu-Vendée. The departmental structure of Vendée dates from the French Revolution and provides a layer of public services and administration above the municipal level. The creation of communes nouvelles like Montaigu-Vendée is intended to help small communes coordinate planning, schools, transport and public utilities.

Economy, culture and community life

The local economy has traditionally been based on agriculture supplemented by small businesses, artisans and services that support nearby towns. Community life typically revolves around municipal and associative activities: seasonal fêtes, cultural events, sports clubs and local markets. Built heritage in and around Boufféré includes parish and civic buildings and rural architectural forms representative of Vendée villages; local groups often promote this heritage for visitors and residents alike.
