Wayne Simmonds (born August 26, 1988, in Scarborough, Ontario) is a Canadian professional ice hockey right winger who has had a long career in the National Hockey League. Drafted in the second round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings, he emerged from the Ontario Hockey League and became known for his combination of physical play, grit and goal-scoring ability. Over his career he has worn the uniforms of several NHL clubs while developing a reputation as a dependable power‑forward type.
Early life and junior hockey
Simmonds grew up in the Toronto area and progressed through local minor hockey before playing major junior in the Ontario Hockey League. He spent time with teams including the Owen Sound Attack and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, where his size and scoring touch attracted attention from NHL scouts. His performance in junior led to his selection in the 2007 draft and the start of his professional career.
Professional career
After entering the Los Angeles Kings organization, Simmonds moved on to greater responsibility with the Philadelphia Flyers, where he became one of the club's primary goal producers and a fan favorite. Later in his career he had stints with the Nashville Predators and New Jersey Devils, and returned to play in his native Ontario with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Across those stops he was valued for his willingness to play physically, his net‑front presence on the power play and his ability to provide timely scoring.
Playing style and contributions
Simmonds is generally described as a power forward: he uses strength and positioning to win battles in front of the net, screens goaltenders and converts rebounds and loose pucks. He combines that net‑front skill set with a resilient approach—often blocking shots, engaging along the boards, and standing up for teammates—which made him an important presence in the locker room as well as on the scoresheet.
Off‑ice work and significance
As one of a smaller number of Black players in professional hockey, Simmonds has been visible in conversations about diversity and inclusion in the sport. He has participated in community initiatives and charitable activities in the cities where he has played, and his career has been cited as part of the broader story of increasing representation in hockey.
