Thomas Kurzhals (13 December 1953 – 2 January 2014) was a German keyboardist, composer and performer who played a prominent role in the rock scene of the former German Democratic Republic. He is best known for his long-term associations with two leading East German rock ensembles: Stern-Combo Meißen and Karat. Kurzhals combined melodic sensibility with an affinity for progressive and symphonic textures.

Early life and career

Kurzhals was born in Ronneburg, in the state of Thuringia in what was then East Germany. Over several decades he contributed to studio recordings, live tours and the evolving sound of rock music behind the Iron Curtain.
