Steve Beshear

Early life and public beginnings

Born and raised in western Kentucky, Beshear attended college and law school in the state before beginning a legal career. He entered state politics in the 1970s and 1980s and served in a succession of roles that raised his public profile. These early posts gave him experience in both legal affairs and executive administration and prepared him for later statewide campaigns.

Political career and elections

Beshear ran for national and state offices at different points. Notably, he was the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in 1996, a contest he lost to Senator Mitch McConnell. He also won the governorship in 2007 and was re-elected for a second term, leaving office in 2015 because of state term limits and being succeeded by Matt Bevin.

He delivered the Democratic response to a joint session address delivered by President Donald Trump to the United States Congress in February 2017. His family remains prominent in Kentucky politics: his son, Andy Beshear, went on to be elected governor of Kentucky, extending the family's political involvement.
