Overview

Matthew Griswold "Matt" Bevin (born January 9, 1967) is an American businessman and politician who served as the 62nd governor of Kentucky from December 2015 until December 2019. A member of the Republican Party, he came to statewide attention after an upset victory in the 2015 general election and later lost reelection in 2019 by a narrow margin.

Early life and business career

Bevin was born in 1967 and entered the private sector before seeking public office. He built a profile as an entrepreneur and investor, emphasizing job creation and private-sector management experience as qualifications for public leadership. His professional background was a central theme of his political identity and campaign messaging.

Governor of Kentucky (2015–2019)

As governor, Bevin pursued a conservative fiscal agenda focused on reducing state spending, reforming public pensions, and reshaping aspects of education and health policy. His administration clashed at times with teachers' groups, public-employee unions, and Democratic legislators over budget priorities and benefit changes. He also used executive authority for appointments and administrative changes that drew both support and criticism.

Policies, controversies, and legacy

  • Fiscal policy: prioritized budget tightening and pension reform efforts intended to address long-term liabilities.
  • Health and education: resisted some expansions of public programs and sought changes to state delivery systems.
  • Public reaction: actions on pensions, workforce reductions, and public comments sparked protests and legal and political pushback.

Elections and later life

Bevin defeated Democrat Jack Conway to win the governorship in 2015. In 2019 he ran for a second term but was narrowly defeated by Democrat Andy Beshear. After leaving office, Bevin remained a polarizing figure in Kentucky politics, known for a combative style and a strong preference for free-market solutions.
