Borka Pavićević (1947–June 30, 2019) was a prominent Serbian dramaturge, columnist and cultural organiser whose activities combined theatre, public debate and civic activism. Known for outspoken criticism of nationalism and for promoting dialogue across political divides, she played a visible role in the cultural opposition that emerged in the former Yugoslavia during the 1990s. She was born in Kotor when that town was part of Yugoslavia and spent much of her public life in Belgrade.
Career and major initiatives
Pavićević trained and worked as a dramaturge while also writing regular columns and essays for newspapers and journals. In 1994 she founded the Centre for Cultural Decontamination, a cultural non-governmental organisation intended to challenge nationalist rhetoric, support human rights and use artistic programming to encourage critical thinking. Earlier, she was a co-founder of the Belgrade Circle, a group of intellectuals and academics who organised discussions and publications in opposition to war and authoritarian politics.
Approach and activities
Her approach blended theatrical sensibility with civic education: programmes at the centre combined performances, exhibitions, debates and workshops aimed at restoring pluralism to public life. Pavićević often acted as host, organiser and interlocutor, seeking to create public spaces where dissenting voices could be heard and where traumatic recent histories could be examined through culture rather than politics alone.
Significance and legacy
Pavićević became widely regarded as a key figure of the liberal, anti-war intelligentsia in Serbia, described by observers as a pacifist intellectual voice in difficult times. Her work helped sustain networks of independent cultural producers and civil society activists during the 1990s and beyond. The organisations she helped build remain reference points for cultural resistance and public engagement in the region.
