Boone County, Missouri

History and name

The county was established in the early 19th century and takes its name from the American pioneer Daniel Boone. Over the decades it evolved from an agricultural backcountry into a more diversified economy as transportation, education and government services concentrated around Columbia and nearby towns.

Population and communities

According to the 2010 census, Boone County had more than 160,000 residents. The county contains the city of Columbia and a number of smaller municipalities, suburbs and rural townships. Growth in population and housing has been driven largely by the university, regional employers, and its role as a service center for surrounding counties.

A defining institution is the University of Missouri, the state’s flagship public research university, which anchors higher education, research and cultural life. Boone County’s economy also includes health care, retail, light manufacturing and agriculture. Cultural offerings range from university-sponsored events to local festivals, parks and historic sites.
