Rob Brydon (born Robert Brydon Jones, 3 May 1965) is a Welsh actor, comedian, impressionist, singer and radio and television presenter. Known for a warm on-screen persona and a gift for mimicry, Brydon has worked across sitcom, panel shows, film and live performance. He uses a blend of observational and self-deprecating humour and has often mixed musical interludes with comic routines. He holds the post-nominal MBE for services to entertainment.
Early life and beginnings
Brydon was born in Baglan, in the historic county of Glamorgan in Wales. He began performing locally and worked in radio and regional theatre before moving to national television. His early experience in stand-up and presentation helped develop the conversational comic voice that would become a hallmark of his later screen work.
Television and film career
On television Brydon became widely known for the sitcom Gavin & Stacey, in which he played Bryn, a character often singled out for gentle, deadpan humour. He gained further attention through the semi-improvised road-comedy series and films made with Steve Coogan, commonly referred to as The Trip, which showcase his talent for extended improvised exchanges and affectionate comic rivalry. Earlier projects that contributed to his public profile include the character-led series Marion & Geoff and the spin-off mock-interview format The Keith Barret Show. He has made guest appearances on sketch shows and taken supporting roles in films such as Supernova.
Panel shows and hosting
Brydon is a familiar face on British panel shows. Since 2009 he has been the host of the BBC One comedy panel show Would I Lie to You?, a long-running format in which his affable, quick-witted style has been central to the programme's appeal. He has also appeared regularly as a guest panellist on a variety of entertainment and current-affairs light-panel formats, where his impressions and ready repartee are frequently on display.
Style, skills and collaborations
Brydon is widely recognised for his impressionist ability and for musical performances delivered within a comic context. His approach tends to favour subtlety, rhythmic timing and rapport with fellow performers over broad physical comedy. Collaborations with other comedians — notably Steve Coogan — emphasise conversational improvisation and character-based humour. He is also noted for portrait work in which small comic variations reveal larger personality traits.
Other work: radio, stage and recordings
Beyond televised comedy and acting, Brydon has worked in radio and on stage, and has recorded material in character. His experience spans light entertainment, scripted parts and voice work. These varied activities reflect a career that moves between broadcasting, live performance and occasional film roles.
Personal life
Off-screen, Brydon has been married twice. He was married to Martina Jones until 2000; the couple had three children. In 2006 he married Claire Holland; they have two sons. Brydon is publicly known as a supporter of Swansea City Association Football Club, an affiliation frequently mentioned in profiles and interviews. He has kept aspects of private family life out of tabloid focus while occasionally referencing his background and regional roots in interviews and on-screen material.
Honours and recognition
Rob Brydon has been recognised for his contribution to entertainment with formal honours and broad public appreciation. Critics and audiences have praised his versatility, particularly his ability to move between presenting, acting and musical/comic performance. His work on both scripted and improvised projects has secured him a steady presence in British comedy over several decades.
