Overview
Richard Casimir Karl August Robert Konstantin, known as Richard, 6th Prince of Sayn‑Wittgenstein‑Berleburg (29 October 1934 – 13 March 2017), was the head of a historic German princely house and the husband of Princess Benedikte of Denmark. He was born in Giessen and spent much of his life at the family seat in Berleburg in Germany, where he carried out duties connected to the estate, family charities and local cultural life.

Family and personal life

Prince Richard married Princess Benedikte of Denmark in 1968, linking a German princely house with the Danish royal family. The couple had three children, who have occupied roles in both family and public life. As head of the House of Sayn‑Wittgenstein‑Berleburg, Richard was responsible for managing family properties, representing the house at official and private events, and overseeing philanthropic activities associated with the estate.

House and historical background

The House of Sayn‑Wittgenstein‑Berleburg is one branch of the historic Sayn‑Wittgenstein family, a mediatized princely dynasty of the Holy Roman Empire and later the German states. Its members traditionally held territorial and social influence in parts of western and central Germany. The Berleburg line is particularly associated with Schloss Berleburg, a castle and landed estate that has served as the family's principal residence for generations.

Health and final years

During his later life Prince Richard faced health challenges. He underwent surgery for prostate cancer in July 2003 and had previously received treatment for skin cancer. On the evening of 13 March 2017 he died suddenly at Schloss Berleburg from what was reported as a suspected heart attack. He was 82 years old.

Significance and legacy

Richard's role combined traditional noble responsibilities with contemporary estate management. He maintained the family seat as a cultural and social center, supported local charitable projects, and reinforced ties between German and Danish royal circles through his marriage to Princess Benedikte. His death marked a transition within the family and the stewardship of its properties.
