Peter Craig Dutton (born 18 November 1970) is an Australian politician who has served as Leader of the Liberal Party and Leader of the Opposition since May 2022. He has represented the Division of Dickson in the Australian House of Representatives since winning the seat in the 2001 federal election. Over two decades in parliament, Dutton has held several senior portfolio positions and been a prominent figure in debates about national security, immigration and law enforcement.
Early life and pre-parliamentary career
Dutton was born in Brisbane, Queensland, and worked as a police officer before entering federal politics. His background in law enforcement influenced his early political profile and policy interests. He moved from a career in state policing to national politics after contesting and winning Dickson, a seat based in suburban and semi-rural areas north of Brisbane.
Ministerial roles and responsibilities
During his time in government, Dutton served in a number of ministerial roles. These included responsibilities for health and sport, immigration and border protection, and the Home Affairs portfolio. In these positions he was responsible for large administrative portfolios and coordinated policy on issues such as border security, migration settings, biosecurity and aspects of domestic law enforcement and national security.
- Minister for Health and Sport (2013–2014)
- Minister for Immigration and Border Protection (2014–2017)
- Minister for Home Affairs (2017–2018)
Leadership of the Liberal Party and Opposition role
Following the 2022 federal election, the Liberal Party moved to the opposition benches. After the party's defeat and the resignation of the party leader, Dutton announced his candidacy for the leadership and was elected by partyroom processes, becoming Leader of the Opposition. As leader he is responsible for presenting alternative policies, holding the government to account in parliament, and leading his party's strategy ahead of future elections.
Public profile, controversies and notable events
Dutton is regularly described in media and public commentary as a leading conservative voice within his party. His policy emphases have often centred on stronger border controls, measures aimed at national security and a tough law-and-order approach. Like many senior politicians, his career has attracted public debate and scrutiny. Notable personal events reported in public sources include a COVID-19 diagnosis in March 2020 and public attention to aspects of his private life and past employment.
