Peter Criss (born George Peter John Criscuola, December 20, 1945) is an American musician known primarily for his role as the original drummer for the rock band KISS. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he became one of the most recognizable figures of 1970s theatrical rock through his stage persona, "The Catman," and his distinctive, gritty singing voice.
Career and role in KISS
Criss joined the group that evolved into KISS in the early 1970s and performed on the band's formative albums and live shows. As the drummer he contributed solid backbeat playing that blended straightforward rock rhythms with occasional jazz- and R&B-influenced fills. His lead vocal on the ballad "Beth" became one of KISS's biggest mainstream hits and remains closely associated with his public identity. During his first tenure he left the band around 1980 and was later replaced by Eric Carr.
Persona and playing style
On stage Criss wore the "Catman" makeup and costume, a visual identity that fit KISS's use of character-driven theatrics. Musically his drumming emphasized feel and groove over technical flash, supporting singable choruses and the bombastic arrangements typical of arena rock. He also contributed backing vocals and occasional lead lines, which broadened his role beyond a timekeeper.
Solo work and later developments
Like several KISS members, Criss recorded outside the group, releasing solo material and performing with other musicians. He participated in the band's high-profile reunion with the original lineup in the mid-1990s, appearing on reunion tours and recordings. Criss has continued to perform intermittently and to be involved in KISS-related events and projects.
Legacy and notable facts
Criss's combination of visual character, anthemic rock drumming, and the vocal hit "Beth" secured his place in popular rock history. As a founding member of KISS he was later recognized when the band received wider institutional honors, and he remains a figure of interest for fans and historians of 1970s rock and glam-influenced stagecraft.
