Patsy Byrne (13 July 1933 – 17 June 2014) was an English character actress whose comic timing and gift for eccentric supporting parts made her a familiar face to British audiences. She gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of the sentimental, idiosyncratic nurse often called Nursie in the televisual comedy that introduced her to many viewers.

Byrne married Patrick John Seccombe in 1967; the couple remained married until his death in 2000. In later life she lived among peers from the theatrical profession and spent her final days at Denville Hall in Northwood, London, a residential care home for entertainers. She died there on 17 June 2014 at the age of 80.

Legacy

Patsy Byrne is remembered for turning relatively small parts into memorable comic portraits. Her Nursie remains one of the better-known supporting characters from the Blackadder series and continues to be cited when that show is discussed as an example of high-quality British television comedy.
