Michael Garver "Mike" Oxley (February 11, 1944 – January 1, 2016) was an American politician and member of the Republican Party. He represented Ohio's 4th congressional district as a U.S. Representative and served multiple terms in the House of Representatives, building a reputation for work on financial regulation and corporate governance. He was born and raised in Findlay, Ohio.

Career and legislative focus

Oxley's congressional career spanned more than two decades. During that time he concentrated on issues affecting capital markets, investor protections and oversight of accounting and corporate practices. He was a prominent voice in the legislative response to early-2000s corporate scandals and helped design measures intended to restore public confidence in financial reporting and auditing.

Notable legislation

Oxley is widely associated with the Sarbanes–Oxley Act, passed in 2002 after a series of high-profile corporate collapses. That law introduced stricter standards for corporate governance, enhanced auditor independence and expanded reporting and internal control requirements for publicly traded companies. The measure reshaped regulatory expectations for boards, auditors and executives, and remains a reference point in discussions of corporate accountability.

Roles and later life

Throughout his time in Congress Oxley served on committees that oversaw financial and economic matters and worked across party lines on regulatory reform. After leaving elective office he remained active as an adviser and in private-sector roles related to policy and compliance, drawing on his experience in Washington.

Legacy and death

Oxley's work influenced how companies disclose financial information and how auditors and corporate officers are held accountable. He died on January 1, 2016 in McLean, Virginia of lung cancer at the age of 71. His career is often cited in discussions of post-Enron reform and the evolving relationship between law, regulation and corporate practice.
