Political career and offices

McDonald was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2009, representing Dublin as an MEP. She returned to national politics and won a Dáil seat in 2011, becoming a TD for Dublin Central. Within Sinn Féin she served as Deputy Leader from 2009 until 2018, before succeeding longtime party leader Gerry Adams.
