Overview
Bodil Malmsten was a Swedish writer known for blending poetry and prose into intimate, often humorous explorations of everyday life, memory and place. Born in 1944 and active from the late 1970s until her death in 2016, she published more than fifteen books in Swedish and won readers beyond Scandinavia through translations. One of her best-known works in English is the translation of Priset på vatten i Finistère, presented to anglophone audiences as The Price of Water in Finistère, which received attention when it was chosen as Book of the Week by BBC Radio 4.
Life and background
Malmsten was born in the village of Bjärme in the province of Jämtland. She came from a family with a strong cultural profile: her grandfather was the designer and architect Carl Malmsten. Throughout her life she moved between Sweden and other places in Europe, and she wrote often about the experience of leaving and making a home elsewhere. She died in Stockholm in 2016 after a battle with cancer.
Work and style
Malmsten’s writing resists easy categorization. Her books combine poetic imagery, short prose pieces and reflective essays. Readers and critics have noted a warm conversational voice, dry wit, and an ability to find philosophical weight in small domestic details. She used plain language to address themes of aging, belonging, solitude and the practicalities of everyday life.
Notable works and reception
- Priset på vatten i Finistère (The Price of Water in Finistère) — a personal account of relocating to Brittany and rethinking what a house and a life mean.
- Collections of poetry and essays spanning the late 20th and early 21st centuries — together forming a distinct voice in modern Swedish letters.
Legacy and significance
Malmsten is remembered for making ordinary moments feel vital and for a humane, unsentimental outlook. Her accessible style helped bring contemporary Swedish literature to international readers through translations and radio presentations. She remains a frequent recommendation for readers interested in lyrical memoir, compact essays and contemporary Scandinavian letters.
