Marián Hossa (born 12 January 1979 in Stará Ľubovňa, then Czechoslovakia, now Slovakia) is a Slovak former professional ice hockey forward. Best known for his time in the National Hockey League (NHL), Hossa built a reputation as a fast, balanced winger who could contribute both offensively and defensively. He most often played on the right side and wore the number 81 for much of his career.

Career overview

Hossa began his North American professional career after entering the NHL system with the Ottawa Senators. Over the years he became a prominent presence on several teams, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Chicago Blackhawks and the Slovak national team. He is widely regarded for his skating speed and his ability to play a complete, two-way game.

During his time with Chicago Hossa signed a long-term deal reported as twelve years for $62.8 million, and he was a key player in the Blackhawks' playoff runs. After losing consecutive Stanley Cup finals earlier in his career, he finally won the Stanley Cup with Chicago in 2010. He won his second Cup with the Blackhawks in 2013, when Chicago defeated the Boston Bruins in the 2013 Stanley Cup Finals.

Playing style and role

Hossa was known for a combination of quick acceleration, long stride and tactical awareness that made him effective both at even strength and on the power play. Coaches valued his versatility: he could be deployed as a scoring winger, a net-front presence, or matched against opposing top lines as a shutdown forward. These traits helped him log significant minutes in regular seasons and playoffs alike.

International play and later career

On the international stage Hossa represented Slovakia at multiple world championships and Olympic tournaments, serving as one of the country’s leading forwards for more than a decade. Later in his career he was sidelined by a progressive skin condition that made it difficult to continue playing; he remained under contract while on long-term injured reserve and did not resume regular on-ice duties thereafter. Despite that, his contributions on the ice left a lasting impression among teammates, opponents and fans.
