Linda Lingle (born Linda Cutter, June 4, 1953) is an American politician and member of the Republican Party. She served two full terms as Governor of Hawaii from 2002 to 2010, becoming the first woman elected to that office in the state's history. Before winning the governorship she was best known for her leadership as Mayor of Maui County.

Early life and rise in local government

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Lingle later moved to Hawaii where she became active in local affairs and Republican politics. Her tenure as Mayor of Maui County established her reputation for fiscal management and attention to tourism and infrastructure issues, helping her build the statewide profile that led to later campaigns.

Governor of Hawaii (2002–2010)

As governor, Lingle emphasized economic development, improving the state's business climate, and promoting tourism while addressing infrastructure and public safety concerns. She served two terms, winning reelection in 2006. Her administration drew attention because she led as a Republican in a state that typically leans Democratic, and because she was Hawaii's first female governor.

Later career and public activities

After leaving the governor's office in 2010, Lingle remained involved in public life and Republican politics. She was a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2012 and has continued to comment on state and national issues. Observers note her role in shaping modern Hawaiian politics by demonstrating cross-party appeal in some elections.
