Overview
Lawrence Lavonne "Larry" Linville (September 29, 1939 – April 10, 2000) was an American actor known primarily for his television work. He achieved his greatest fame portraying Captain Frank Burns on the long-running series M*A*S*H, a role that defined his public image. Linville's death at age 60 was attributed to complications of pneumonia.
Character and screen persona
Frank Burns was written as an inept, rigid, and punctilious surgical officer whose rivalry with the show's protagonists provided much of the program's comic tension. Linville played Burns with a mix of pomposity and insecurity, creating a foil for the series' more irreverent characters. His portrayal combined farce with dramatic beats, helping M*A*S*H balance satire and human drama.
Career and development
Before and during his television success, Linville worked in theatre and appeared in a variety of television guest roles and small film parts. Concerned about being typecast after several seasons on M*A*S*H, he chose to leave the series following its early years; the show subsequently introduced a new character to fill the narrative and tonal gap. Linville continued to act on stage and in television after his departure.
Later life and legacy
Following his exit from the series, Linville remained active as a working actor with occasional guest appearances and stage work. While he did not seek the spotlight to the same degree as some of his co-stars, his work on M*A*S*H left a lasting mark on popular culture: Frank Burns became a shorthand for officious incompetence and a memorable component of the show's ensemble.
