Overview

Khetag Gazyumov (born 24 April 1983 in Alagir, North Ossetian ASSR) is a freestyle wrestler of Ossetian background who competed internationally for Azerbaijan. He earned Olympic bronze medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics, becoming one of Azerbaijan’s most recognizable wrestlers in the upper weight divisions.

Background and early career

Raised in the North Caucasus, a region with a strong wrestling tradition, Gazyumov developed in local clubs before representing Azerbaijan at major international events. Many athletes from the Caucasus have pursued competitive opportunities with neighboring national teams; Gazyumov’s move reflects that broader pattern of mobility in the sport.

Competition, style and weight class

Gazyumov competed in the heavier freestyle categories, where strength, balance and tactical par terre (ground) work are decisive. Wrestlers at this level combine explosive takedowns with endurance and positional control; Gazyumov was noted for his physicality and technical command in these areas.
