Overview
Ken Barrie was the professional name of Leslie Hulme (9 January 1933 – 29 July 2016), an English voice actor and singer. He became widely recognised in the United Kingdom for his work on children’s television, most notably for narrating and performing the theme music for series produced by the BBC.
Career and style
Barrie’s vocal style was characterised by a warm, conversational narration and clear, melodic singing suited to young audiences. He frequently combined narration with character work, supplying multiple distinct voices within a single programme. This dual role—narrator and vocalist—helped create a consistent sound world for the shows with which he was associated.
Notable works
His best-known credits include two BBC children’s series. He narrated and sang the theme tune for Postman Pat, and he performed similar duties for Charlie Chalk. In both series he also provided the voices of several supporting characters, a common practice in animated and puppet-based programmes to keep the cast small and cohesive.
- Postman Pat — narrator, theme singer and multiple character voices
- Charlie Chalk — narrator and theme performer
Barrie’s voice became closely identified with the gentle, domestic world these programmes depicted; the theme songs he sang remain familiar to generations who watched the shows during their childhood.
