Joseph Shivers, inventor of spandex (Lycra)

Shivers worked as a professional textile chemist and conducted research on synthetic polymers in the mid‑20th century. While at a major chemical company in the late 1950s he led experiments that produced a polyurethane‑based elastic fiber with exceptional stretch and recovery. That fiber was commercialized as Lycra (commonly called spandex or elastane), introduced to the market in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Spandex is valued for a combination of properties that set it apart from natural elastic materials:

• High elasticity — can stretch many times its resting length and return to shape.
