John Jacob Lavranos

Botanical focus and activities

Lavranos specialized in succulent plants, particularly aloes, euphorbias and other drought‑adapted groups. He organized and participated in numerous collecting trips across Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, gathering living plants and herbarium specimens. Many of his specimens were distributed to botanical gardens and herbaria worldwide, where they supported taxonomic study and conservation work.

Contributions and legacy

Although not classically trained as a botanist, Lavranos worked closely with taxonomists and contributed to the discovery and formal description of several plant taxa. In recognition of his efforts, a number of species have been given epithets that honor him. His extensive living collection, accumulated over decades, became a resource for horticulture, research and public education.

Later life

After many years living outside Greece, Lavranos settled in southern Portugal. In 1995 he moved to Loulé, a small town near Faro, where he continued to cultivate succulents and to correspond with botanists and collectors around the world. He donated the bulk of his living plants to the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, ensuring long‑term care and public access to his collections.

Death

John Jacob Lavranos died in Loulé on 1 February 2018 following a stroke. His collections and the plants he distributed continue to support study, cultivation and appreciation of succulent plant diversity.
