John Joseph "Joe" Nevin (born 7 June 1989) is an Irish boxer from Mullingar, County Westmeath. He rose through the amateur ranks as a bantamweight (56 kg) and represented Ireland at two Olympic Games. Nevin combined technical skill and an upright, mobile approach to establish himself among the top international feather- to bantamweight competitors of his era.

Amateur career and Olympic achievement

Nevin first appeared on the Olympic stage at the 2008 Summer Olympics, gaining valuable experience against world-class opposition. His most notable achievement came at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where he advanced to the final of the bantamweight division and earned the silver medal for Ireland. In the final he faced Great Britain’s Luke Campbell and finished the tournament as runner-up, securing one of Ireland’s most prominent boxing results at those Games.

Professional career and rankings

Following his Olympic success, Nevin announced on 6 October 2012 that he would turn professional, revealing his decision on a television programme. As an amateur he had been recognised in the AIBA world rankings and at one point was listed among the top three competitors in the men’s 56 kg category. His move to the paid ranks marked a new phase in his boxing career and followed a common path for Olympic medallists seeking opportunities in professional boxing.

Style, significance and legacy

Nevin was known for a disciplined, technically oriented style that emphasised timing and footwork. His Olympic medal contributed to Ireland’s strong contemporary tradition in amateur boxing and provided a model for younger Irish boxers aspiring to compete internationally. He remains a notable figure in Irish sport for bringing Olympic success to a smaller county community.
