John Henry George Forgham, known professionally as John Forgeham (14 May 1941 – 10 March 2017), was an English actor whose work spanned film, television and theatre. He became widely recognised by television audiences for his portrayal of the wheeler-dealer Frank Laslett in the ITV drama Footballers' Wives. His screen career also included a credited appearance in the classic film The Italian Job.
Career and screen persona
Forgeham built a reputation as a reliable character actor who could play tough, world-weary or morally ambiguous figures. Over several decades he took supporting and recurring parts that showcased a gruff presence and straight delivery. While never always in leading roles, his performances provided memorable texture to ensemble casts and genre productions.
Notable roles
- Frank Laslett — the power-broker in the ITV series Footballers' Wives, the role that brought him the most public attention.
- Film appearances — credited in the ensemble cast of The Italian Job and other cinematic projects where he often filled character roles.
- Stage and television work — a steady presence in British drama across different formats, admired for dependability and craft.
Death and aftermath
Forgeham died on 10 March 2017 at the age of 75. He had suffered a fall at his home in Worthing, in East Sussex, and later succumbed to internal bleeding; reports also noted a broken collarbone resulting from the accident. His death prompted tributes from colleagues and fans who recalled his distinctive contributions to British television and film.
Although often associated with a single high-profile television role, Forgeham's career exemplifies the working character actor: a performer whose steady, professional presence supported a wide range of productions and helped define the texture of many popular British dramas and films.
