Joseph Leslie "Joe" Sample (February 1, 1939 – September 12, 2014) was an American pianist, keyboard player and composer best known as a founding member of the Jazz Crusaders (later known simply as The Crusaders). Born and raised in Houston, Texas, he built a career that bridged straight‑ahead jazz, soul, R&B and funk and brought the tone of electric keyboards into popular jazz settings. He remained active as a leader, sideman and studio musician for several decades.

Musical style and instruments

Sample's playing combined lyrical post‑bop phrasing with grooves drawn from rhythm and blues. He performed on acoustic piano and a variety of electric keyboards that became central to his sound, shaping the texture of many late 20th‑century jazz recordings. His approach often emphasized strong melodic lines and accessible harmonies while allowing space for rhythmic interplay.

  • Primary instruments: acoustic piano, electric piano (Fender Rhodes), organ, synthesizers
  • Genres: jazz, jazz‑fusion, soul, R&B, jazz‑funk

Career and development

Sample rose to prominence as one of the original members of the Jazz Crusaders, a group that blended hard bop with elements of soul and popular music and later changed its name to The Crusaders as its repertoire expanded. In addition to his ensemble work, Sample maintained a solo career and was in demand as a session musician and arranger. He collaborated with a wide range of artists across stylistic boundaries and contributed keyboard parts and compositions to many recordings beyond his own albums.

Legacy and notable recordings

Joe Sample played a role in popularizing electric keyboard sounds in mainstream jazz and in helping to create the smoother, groove‑oriented style sometimes called jazz‑funk or fusion. His albums and compositions are regularly cited by musicians who followed him, and recordings by The Crusaders reached audiences beyond traditional jazz listeners. One well‑known solo release is Rainbow Seeker, which exemplifies his melodic sensibility and polished production.

Sample died in Houston on September 12, 2014, at the age of 75. His influence endures through his recordings, the continuing popularity of The Crusaders' catalog, and the many players who adopted his combination of harmonic sophistication and rhythmic accessibility.
