Overview
Teruaki "Jimmy" Murakami (June 5, 1933 – February 16, 2014) was a Japanese-American animator and director whose career spanned television, commercials, short films and feature animation. He is widely remembered for his association with animated adaptations of Raymond Briggs' works, most notably When the Wind Blows, and for cofounding the production company Murakami-Wolf Films with Fred Wolf.
Career and approach
Murakami worked across a variety of formats and markets, from brief commercial spots to longer-form storytelling. His work is characterized by economical line work, hand-drawn techniques and a focus on human emotion; when adapting prose or picture books he sought to preserve an author’s tone rather than overwrite it. Over decades he collaborated internationally and moved between roles as animator, director and studio executive.
Major works and projects
Among his best-known projects are adaptations and productions that brought literary material to animated form. He directed and produced projects that blended understated visuals with mature themes. Key items associated with his career include:
- When the Wind Blows — a widely cited animated adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ book, notable for its sober subject matter and emotional directness.
- Animated adaptations of Briggs’ work — Murakami is frequently linked with Briggs adaptations and sequences that translate illustration into motion.
- Murakami-Wolf Films — the company he formed with producer Fred Wolf, which played a role in television and commercial animation production.
Legacy and significance
Murakami’s contributions are often noted for their narrative restraint and craft-driven animation. He helped establish production pathways that allowed literary and adult-oriented animated stories to reach viewers beyond the usual children’s market. Colleagues and subsequent animators have cited his dedication to clear visual storytelling and his ability to shepherd delicate source material into animated form. He died in 2014 at the age of 80.
